Crochet Coffee Cup Cozy Free Pattern
If you’re anything like me… you need your hot beverage in the morning! Personally, I love tea. Being Canadian, I love my Tim Horton’s (It’s not a stereotype if it’s true). There is one problem with ordering a hot beverage in a paper cup… IT’S HOT! Even with the paper sleeve they offer in store, it’s sometimes just too hot to hold. So here is a crochet coffee cup cozy free pattern that is so easy to follow you’ll make 10 of them in the time it took me to write this! They also make great gifts and will fit on any mug, even with a handle (If you only use the button and don’t sew it together… but you’ll see what I mean)!!
**Feel free to use this pattern as much as you like. Please remember to always refer back to this post when sharing the pattern so that we can continue to share them for free!
- Size G/6 (4.25 MM) Hook
- Standard yarn of your choice. I like to use Red Heart – Super Saver.
- 1 Button
- Embroidery needle
- ch = chain
- st = stitch
- hdc = half double crochet
- sc = single crochet
Row 1: Ch 13. Work in 1 sc in the second st from your hook. Sc in each st until the end of the ch for a total of 12 stitches. Ch 1, turn.
Row 2-38: Work 1 sc in each st across your row for a total of 12. Ch 1, turn.
Row 39: Work 1 sc into each st across the row for a total of 12 stitches. **You should now have a long rectangle. To make sure it will fit around your cup, take it and wrap it around a cup for comparison. If it is too short, simply add a couple of rows, if it is too long then take a row or two out. This pattern is just that adjustable! Remember that you want it to be snug so that it won’t slip off of your cup. If it is to the correct length, then continue with this step.** Ch 1 and finish off work. Make sure to work in your lose end.
For the strap you should gauge the loop by the size of the button your choose. I chose a larger button so my loop is bigger, but the actual length of the loop doesn’t have to be exact. If you adjust the size of the chain, just add more or less double crochet stitches on the chain.
Row 1: Attach your work to the top of the 5th stitch of your last row with a sl st. Ch 5, then attach your work to the top of the 7th stitch of your last row. This should now form a loop big enough for your button to fit through while allowing it to be snug.
Row 2: Ch 2. Work 10 hdc around the ch (Not working into the ch stitches). Sc into the st where you connected your work. Tie off your end and work in your lose strands of yarn.
Wrap your cozy around a mug and see where your loop lines up on your main block. Mark where the button should be.
Using your embroidery needle, attach the button securely.
I have one cozy for mugs at home, but for drinks on the go, I wanted a more secure cozy. To make sure your cozy doesn’t twist, you can sew the end stitches together where your button lines up. See the pictures below:
You are finished! You can now enjoy a hot cup of deliciousness without burning your hands! Let me know what you think! Hope you enjoyed this crochet coffee cup cozy free pattern!
