It is funny how you see familiar styles or patterns on things all of the time but never know what they are called.  Polka-dots are easy to identify, but houndstooth?  I always liked the way it looked, but never knew what it was called.  Once I figured out what it was called, I decided to crochet something with its pattern!  I found a simple explanation for how to do the houndstooth pattern and decided to make another headband. Hope you like this crochet houndstooth headband free pattern!

This pattern is extremely simple.  It is made up of a single crochet then a double crochet over and over.  For this particular headband, I decided to split the end and crisscross the pieces for added touch, but you don’t have to.  If you wish to just continue with a straight headband, then go ahead and continue!

**Please feel free to use these patterns as much as you like, but please always refer back to this post to share the pattern so that we can continue to post them for free!

Materials

  • Size F/5 – 3.75 MM Hook
  • 2 balls of yarn (1 of each colour).  I used Red Heart – Super Saver yarn
  • embroidery needle
  • scissors

Abbreviations

  • ch = Chain
  • sc = Single crochet
  • dc = Double crochet

Pattern

This pattern is a large size.  For a smaller headband just do less rows.  Note that each row will begin with a sc and end with a dc.  You will also carry your work through each row once both colours are being used.

ROW 1: Ch 17, turn.  Work 1 sc into the second stitch from your hook.  *Dc into the next st.  Sc into the next st.* Repeat * instructions for the entire row for a total of 16 st.  You should end on a dc.

Row 2: Change your colour by chaining 1 with the secondary colour.  You can tie the loose ends of your colours together now.  For this row and every row going forward, you will carry your unused colour through your work. Once you have switched colours, turn.  Sc into the first st.  *Dc into the next st.  Sc into the next st.*  Repeat * instructions for the entire row for a total of 16 st.  You should end on a dc.

Row 3: Ch 1 using the colour that you just carried through your work.  Turn.  Work 1 sc into the second stitch from your hook.  *Dc into the next st.  Sc into the next st.* Repeat * instructions for the entire row for a total of 16 st.  You should end on a dc.

Change colours by pulling through the next colour in your ch to the new row.

Row 4 – 49: Repeat instructions from Row 3.

NOTE:  If you do not wish to crisscross your headband like it is shown in the picture, simply continue with the above instructions to add as many rows as you need to fit around your head.  However, if you would like to add a little something extra with a crisscross then continue onto the next instructions.

Row 50: Ch 1 using the colour that you just carried through your work.  Turn.  Work 1 sc into the second stitch from your hook.  *Dc into the next st.  Sc into the next st.*  Do this for only 5 more st for a total of 8 st.  (this is exactly half and will also be your new ‘row’)

Row 51 – 61: Ch 1 using the colour that you just carried through your work.  Turn.  Work 1 sc into the second stitch from your hook.  *Dc into the next st.  Sc into the next st.* Do this for only 5 more st for a total of 8 st.

At row 61, tie off your end.

Row 62: This row will begin right where you left off on row 50.  Make sure you are going in the same direction as you were when you left off.  Tie a slip knot to your hook then sc into the 9th st of the row to connect your work.  This also counts as your first sc. (see picture below).  *Dc into the next st.  Sc into the next st.* Do this for only 5 more st for a total of 8 st.

Row 63 – 72: Ch 1 using the colour that you just carried through your work.  Turn.  Work 1 sc into the second stitch from your hook.  *Dc into the next st.  Sc into the next st.* Do this for only 5 more st for a total of 8 st.

You should now have a split up the end of your headband.  It will look like it has two straps.  Fold your headband is half.  Cross the right strap over the left strap, making sure they aren’t twisting over each other, and line it up to the left side of row 1.  Attach this strap to form the loop of your headband with your embroider needle.  Do this also for the left strap.  See the picture below.

The last thing you have to do is flip the headband inside out.  The other side will look much nicer.  You are finished! I hope that you enjoyed this pattern.  I know I’ll be using this houndstooth stitch a lot in the near future!
